Marguerite: AFDA is one of those colleges where you get to work with the best students as well as the best lecturers. We popped into a third / fourth year film project. [Fans herself cool]. I’m getting really hot. [Continues typing on the computer keyboard].

Host: Stop complaining Marguerite.

From concept to final product, it is no small feat to make a movie. A few people that are indeed brave enough to rise to the challenge are the students at AFDA. Here they are!

Julius: I am Julius Jooste, the producer on the production Cashile, we are on location in Munsieville just outside Krugersdorp. We are busy shooting a twelve minute short film for our graduation production.

Julius: The concept is as follows. It’s about something that happens in the lives of two young boys that traumatizes them for the rest of their lives. You know, Sunday afternoon, a typical situation, they want to do something exciting, something that makes them feel alive and it inevitably leads to them accidentally killing the spaza shop owner’s son. And instead of going to the police, you know to come clean, they decide to bury the dead body instead.

The story pics of twelve years later and we see how the situation has impacted the lot of them.

It’s very dark. In terms of a genre it is more of a drama but also it also references films like Mystic River, Memento, Reservoir Dogs. The typical AFDA projects.

Also, I heard the joke in the industry is that it isn’t an AFDA film if it doesn’t have blood. And we have plenty of blood on the set.

AFRIKAANSE VERTALING

Ons het by so derde / vierde jaar film projek ‘n draai gemaak. [waai haarself koel]. Ek kry verskriklik warm.
